Sita and Ram |
|
|
Ram is the protagonist of The Ramayana, one of the epics of the Hindus. According to Hindu mythology, Ram happens to be the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This particular incarnation of Vishnu as Ram was necessitated in order to put an end to the life of Ravana, the lord of the Demons and the king of the land of Lanka. As a reward of his meditation, Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma had blessed Ravana that he would have the power of immunity to resist the deathly attacks of the Gods, Demons and the Gandharvas. He was quite confident that the human beings are too little to kill a strong and powerful demon like him.

Being granted with this blessing he started thinking himself to be the lord of the universe. This power was utilized by Ravana in a very negative way. He started destructive activities to make a show of his power.
When the end of necessitated, Vishnu had to take the form of a human being in order to satisfy the conditions that were required to kill Ravana. Ram was the eldest son of King Dasharath. He had three other brothers. From the very childhood, Ram and Lakshman, one of his brothers, became very famous as brave warriors, killing good many demons who disturbed the monks.
Ram got married to Sita, the daughter of King Janak, when only he could lift the and bend the Bow of Lord Shiva in the 'swayamvar sava' that was organized to find the deserving suitor for Sita. Sita and Ram came back to Ayodhya only to find that they had to go to the forest for fourteen years since king Dasharath had to send them in order to keep his promise to Kaikeyi. Sita, a devotee to her husband also wanted to go with him. Lakshman also decided to join his elder brother.
Sita and Ram and Lakshman went to the forest and started leading a happy life while Bharat, another brother of Ram, ruled the kingdom in the name of Ram keeping Ram's 'paduka' ( wooden sandal ) on the throne. In the meantime, Sita was abducted by Ravana as Ravana wanted to take revenge of his sister's nose being cut by Lakshman as she tried to hurt Sita when her proposal of marriage to Ram and Lakshman was turned down.
It took many years for Ram to rescue Sita from the captivity of Ravana. With the help of Hanuman and his clan, Ram was able to rescue his wife. Sita and Ram started a happy life after coming back to the kingdom. But the problem arose when the countrymen expressed doubt in Sita's character. Sita had to undergo a fire test in order to prove that she still retained her virtue even after she was abducted and taken captive for long years by a demon like Ravana. This doubt was expressed repeatedly, as a result of which Sita got back into the earth from where she is believed to have emerged.
Sita and Ram together form many stories in Hindu mythology. Other gods and goddesses are not so much down to earth as Sita and Ram. |
