Hanuman

Hanuman is regarded as one of the most powerful deities in the Hindu mythology and scriptures. Hanuman is said to have aided Lord Rama in his defeat of the Ravana who had captured Sita. Hanuman was mentioned in the Ramayana which is considered the holy text of the Hindus and also an epic poem describing the conquests, trail and tribulations faced by Lord Rama. Hanuman is the staunchest believer and follower of Lord Rama. He was instrumental in saving Sita and at the same time helps Rama in every stage of the fight with Ravana.

Hanuman is also referred as the monkey god or the Vanara. The weapon of Hanuman is a mace commonly known as the Gada in Hindi. Hanuman is among those other gods and goddesses who are considered as very powerful entities. Hanuman’s mother was Anjana who was a female vanara or monkey. Anjana was a heavenly being but was transformed into a female vanara due to a curse. Hanuman was born it is commonly believed after Anjana worshipped Lord Shiva and Shiva being pleased with her devotion granted her with the birth of Hanuman. Hanuman was an incarnation of Shiva. Another version about Hanuman’s birth is that his father is the Goddess of Wind that is Vayu. It is hence believed that due to his being Vayu’s son, he can fly to any heights, as the powers are inherited by Vayu. Another name of Hanuman is Anjaneya.

There are many tales relating to Hanuman about his childhood days. The most common tale is that Hanuman tried to reach the sun thinking it to be a fruit. He was struck by Lord Indra’s weapon that is the thunder bolt. Hanuman fell down and became unconscious. Vayu looking at this took Hanuman away and along with him took away the atmosphere too. This led to the dying of living beings due to lack of air. In order to make the living beings on this Earth live, Indra took away his curse and then Vayu was pacified. He gave back the atmosphere. Hanuman was also granted with many blessings and other powers in order to revive him. Hanuman was revived with all the lords in heaven coming together and giving some of the divine powers and blessings.

Hanuman was the great disciple of Rama. He adored Rama as if he is the only God that exists. Hanuman’s true devotion towards Rama is reflected by several of his acts. It seemed that his life revolved around only towards worshipping Rama. His utter respect towards Rama can be seen through the numerous instances that followed during his course of life. So true was his devotion, that he seldom thought about his own interest while catering to the needs of his God Rama. When Rama asked him to get the news about Sita from Lanka, he did not even give a single thought about it and plunged into action in an instant. The life threatening challenges that came from the fiercest of demons were tackled with mastery and boldness.
